2-HYDROXYETHYL BENZOATE

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) maintains its commercial importance.
2-Hydroxyethyl benzoate can be used in studies related to thermal
degradation in the recycling of clothes, plastic bottles and similar products
obtained from this chemical. In addition, 2-hydroxyethyl benzoate is used
as a reactive chemical in many reactions.

Description

2-Hydroxyethyl benzoate (product of thermal degradation of polyethylene terephthalate) is
a reagent that used in the intermediate stages of various chemical and biochemical reactions.
The isolation of this compound in Corchorus olitorius L.1 and Andrographis paniculata2
plants confirms this information.Research has suggested that this compound is a degradation
product of biopolymers in plants. The use of these degradation enzymes in PET
(polyethylene terephthalate) recycling has been questioned.
Thermobifida alba chitinase, which plays a role in the destruction of biopolymers,
was isolated from bacteria in garden soil and its hydrolysis effect on 3PET
(Bis(benzoyloxyethyl)terephthalate) was investigated.3 It resulted in obtaining a large
amount of 2-hydroxyethyl benzoate.
