DL-ASPARTIC ACID

Aspartic acid is an amino acid that can be produced in the body. Also aspartic acid is one of the 20 standard amino
acids found in the structure of proteins. It has a chiral structure. So it has two enantiomers, L-Aspartic acid and D-aspartic
acid. It is soluble in water, insoluble in ether, alcohol and DMSO.

Description

DL-Aspartic acid has a very high melting and decomposition point and is non-volatile. It contains two carboxyl
and one amino group in its molecular structure. It is amphoteric because it contains both basic and acidic groups.
Its anionic form is called aspartate.
The most important chemical reaction of the functional groups of aspartic acid is the formation of esters and
amides. Methyl and ethyl esters are used as intermediates in peptide synthesis.
Aspartic acid is obtained by different laboratory methods or by enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins.
